KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A Northland middle school was evacuated after a shirtless man was found on the building's roof and then arrested. Upset parents were allowed to pick up their children at a nearby high school.

Adam L. Caulkin, 31, was placed into custody after gaining access to the roof of Eastgate Middle School, located at 4700 Northeast Parvin Rd., which is just west of North Brighton Avenue.

The incident began about 10:30 a.m. Monday after the school's principal spotted Caulkin on top of the roof.

Capt. Matt Hunter with the Clay County Sheriff's Office said Caulkin was seen hiding behind an air-conditioning unit and had his shirt pulled up over his face.

Hunter could not say how long Caulkin was on the roof before the principal saw him.

With the help from Kansas City police and firefighters, a tactical team with the Clay County Sheriff's Office made entry onto the roof and arrested Caulkin about 10:50 a.m.

Authorities said Caulkin declined to comply with lawful orders from deputies. A stun gun was deployed, and Caulkin was subsequently placed into custody.

Deputies discovered what appeared to be drug paraphernalia near where Caulkin was hiding. No weapons were discovered at the scene.

"The swift actions of the school administrators to properly secure the school and students enabled law enforcement to focus directly on apprehending the subject quickly with no bystander being injured. This is a great example how our community can work together as one to obtain a common goal," Sheriff Paul Vescovo said.

The school is part of the North Kansas City School District.

A district spokeswoman said the students were bused to an undisclosed location to be reunited with their parents. That location was apparently Winnetonka High School.

KCTV5 went to Winnetonka High School where Eastgate parents said they were picking up their children. Parents said they were upset about the circumstances and concerned about the lack of information given to them about the unfolding situation.

"I tried not to cry. I was shaking," said parent Sarah Greenough. "I was terrified."

Parents were relieved the situation wound up with no one being hurt.

Caulkin is currently being held at the Clay County Detention Center. He likely faces charges of trespassing and property damage, Hunter said.

Investigators are exploring whether he was tampering with the air-conditioning system and what damage may have been done. Air-conditioning units are popular targets for copper thieves.
