LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Neighbors said they were surprised but not shocked after a Jefferson County Public Schools bus went off the road near Hartstern Elementary.
The accident happened near a curving section of Monaco Drive near Buena Vista Court.
"I heard a really loud noise," said Monaco Drive resident Stephanie Burnett. "They've been blasting over there so I thought it might have been that but I looked out and there's a bus in my front yard."
Bus 0858 narrowly missed a utility pole before coming to a stop in the front lawns of Stephanie Burnett and Lavonne White.
"It startled me because I've not heard a noise like that before," said White, a Monaco Drive resident. "When I got to the front door there was a school bus in my front yard."
Both White and Burnett said they immediately sprang into action.
"They were all shook up," said Burnett. "I tried to calm them down some."
"I'm a nurse," said White. "So I started to ask questions. Nobody was unconscious or bleeding, but there were two students that were having trouble breathing."
"I think they may have been asthmatic," said Burnett.
While the women said the accident startled both the students and their neighbors, they said it came as little surprise.
"It was bound to happen. Buses really," began White, "they fly around this curve all the time."
"We have daycare workers at the end of the street that have told us they've called the bus compound multiple times and made complaints on how fast she goes," said Burnett.
According to both Burnett and White, speed had been an issue neighbors had complained about for years.
"Buses drive too fast around this curve," said White, "and not only buses, cars do too."
"I'm just very thankful that there was no serious injuries," said Burnett.
It's not yet clear if speed played role in this accident, but JCPS school officials confirmed the bus driver involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the district's investigation results.
