Levy votes may gain a new Perrysburg school

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The growing number of students in each grade is a constant problem at Perrysburg schools. Now school officials say they have a permanent fix in mind.

The plan is to get students out of the portable classrooms and build a brand new school for students in fifth and sixth grades at Frank Elementary. Here's the catch: a levy will be on the ballot this November in order to make it happen.

"There's been 600 students added and we need to do something," said Tom Hosler, Superintendent, Perrysburg Schools.

There are too many students and not enough room. The school district is growing so rapidly, they're having trouble making space. 20 portable classrooms are being used now at five different schools.

"We spent half a million dollars on used portables installing them last year. If we continue down this path that's really taking money away from the general fund," said Hosler.

The lower level grades are experiencing the most growth with nearly 400 students per grade in the middle school. District officials say they must build a new fifth and sixth grade school to make room. Many parents say they will vote in favor of this change.

"I think it's really good that the schools are investing in their students and that they care so much about the education of their students," said Shannon Dazey.

Details about the levy have not been decided. However the superintendent is estimating a homeowner of a $200,000 house will pay about $7 more per month than they already are.

"Going through a fast food drive, that's a value meal with a coke and fries," said Hosler.

There is no word on where this new school will be. Officials say the district is eyeing a few properties near the high school and junior high. All plans will be presented Tuesday May 13 to the board of education.
