Terra State Community College dropping medical program

Posted: Updated:
FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Tough news for students at Terra State Community College in Fremont: the college is dropping one of its programs, forcing some students to transfer to pursue their degree.

"It's an extremely expensive program," said TSCC marketing director Mary McCue.

A luck of funding to support the medical lab technician degree means the school has no choice but to give it the boot.

"It's very heavily loaded with equipment that is extremely expensive.  It's specialized equipment," said McCue.

Terra State Officials plan to cut the Medical Lab Tech program next fall.  It was being offered at the Fremont campus through Lorrain Community College in previous years.

Officials say 13 students in 2013 and 14 students in 2014 took a prerequisite class, but none of them were officially enrolled in the program.

"We're looking to do a degree audit for the students to help them transfer, if they would like, or to have them graduate from Terra with an Associate of Science degree," said McCue.

Staff at Terra are now working with students to help them transition into similar programs at Bowling Green State University, the Mercy Lab program in Toledo or Ohio Northern University.

No other programs are expected to be cut at the school this fall.
