A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Groundbreaking for the new Ronald McDonald House took place Tuesday. The new house will be built across the street from the current location on Monroe Street and is expected to house twice as many families.
It's an $8 million project that's being funded by a number of donors.
The new Ronald McDonald House will have 28 rooms, serving twice as many families as the current house, which has 14 rooms. Combining both houses, more families will be served in the Glass City.
Organizers expect the new house to serve the community for at least 50 years.
"There is a need and it's proven that children do better during their hospital stays if their families are close," explained board chairman Gary Yunker.
The new house will be named after Yunker and his wife. The pair played a vital role in getting the first house established more than 30 years ago.
The project is expected to be complete in June 2015.
