A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Residents in west Toledo say an alarming number of dogs are missing from their area. A majority of the reports have come in from around Willys Park.
The Facebook group Find Ford will be gathering Sunday May 18 with as many people as possible to figure out why these dogs are gone. The group hopes to find the more than 30 missing 4-legged family members and bring them home.
"Many people, and I did it previously myself, will just open the door and let their dogs out the back door, you know, into the yard. You can't do that anymore," said Malysa Bell.
Bell is an active member of the group Find Ford for dog owners who have lost their pets and are determined to find them.
Ford went missing in December. He is the poster dog for all the others. Residents are wondering if the dogs are being stolen. Are they running away? Bell says they have a few ideas of what may be happening with the dogs.
"They're either being used for flipping which is where somebody will get the dog then resell it on Craigslist online, somewhere else, or if they're being used for dog fighting," said Bell.
Bell has tips for dog owners: microchip your pet, tag your dog, make sure you have a recent picture in case he or she does go missing, and have your pet spayed or neutered.
It isn't just west Toledo where dogs are going missing. It's happening all around the city but west Toledo has had the most occurrences. Bell recommends if you think your dog is stolen to file a police report.
If you want to join the effort, Find Ford will be gathering at Willys Park on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. If your dog is missing or you find a dog, help find its owner at these sites: www.facebook.com/groups/FindFord
