A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Good news for Toledo residents who don't have health insurance or are under-insured: the Summit YMCA in downtown Toledo hosts a free health clinic.
The Neighborhood Free Health Clinic is run by area doctors who volunteer their time and get paid nothing for their services. The doctors say they do it especially to help those in need.
"(The) average income around there is $11,000 a year per family," said Physician Assistant Paul Chandler. "A lot of them either don't have insurance, they don't have good insurance or they just don't have access."
Now, because of this free health clinic, many more people have access to a wide array of health services.
"Like a family practice or internal medicine cline, we see pretty much any patient that walks through the door," said Chandler. "We also do women's (medicine) here, we also do a little bit of pediatrics."
The health clinic opened its doors in January and currently sees a handful of patients each week. Doctors are hoping to see many more people in coming weeks.
The clinic is available every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Summit St. YMCA, which is located at 306 Bush St.
