Dozens walk to raise awareness of need for foster parents

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Dozens of people marched to raise awareness of the need for more foster parents in Lucas County on Thursday, May 22.

May is national foster care month, so Lucas County Children Services' staff and foster families took to the streets to recognize the work that foster parents do for children and families in the community.

The group walked to Levis Square at Madison Avenue and St. Clair Street, and then back to the Lucas County Children Services' offices.

The purpose of the walk was twofold. First, to celebrate the service that foster parents provide,
and also  to raise awareness of the need for more foster parents in Lucas County.

At any given time more than 500 children are in foster care and more families are needed; particularly families able to care for groups of three or more brothers and sisters, and families able to care for children with special needs.

"So many parents fall short of taking care of their responsibilities and we just step up to help them so they can possibly be reunited with their families in the future," said Gloria Cooper.

If you would like to become a foster parent, you can find more information at www.co.lucas.oh.us.
