TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two local high school students gave up their education to fight for our country. It is a graduation 73 years in the making.

Those who are brave enough to serve our country make many sacrifices, and sometimes that sacrifice can be an education. Two very deserving war veterans finally got their high school diploma.

It was 1941 when Virginia White and Victor Kretz left Toledo Public Schools to serve in World War II. They both left behind a high school education.

In a special Memorial Day ceremony, Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant gave them their diploma.

"I can't explain it. It is that important. I can't put it into words," said Kretz.

"I am real glad that I am going to get my diploma. I have waited a long time," said White.

This is the 99th year that the school has held a Memorial Day ceremony honoring our nations veterans.
