A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Toledo residents spent the Memorial Day weekend in a lot of locations, but outdoors was the most popular. The Toledo Zoo and Mud Hens games were other favorites. It was hot but that didn't keep thousands of people from enjoying, or keeping in mind what the holiday is all about.
Another Mud Hens sell-out was the perfect setting for the unofficial start to summer.
"Our friends had vouchers and invited us to come along so here we are and we're going to enjoy it, hope the Mud Hens win," said Phyllis Dehring of Williston, Ohio.
"We like to go to the ball game at 2 or 3 times in the summer and this our first time so, it is a beautiful way to spend the day," said Diana Peth of Martin, Ohio.
From one Toledo favorite to another, the Toledo Zoo saw about 30,000 families over the holiday weekend. The new penguin beach was the hot new exhibit getting most of the attention, but not all of it.
"Mine was the parakeets," said visitor Jadyn.
"Penguins and polar bears. Favorite animal is the penguins, go to love the penguins. Polar bears were kissing," said members of the Appleman family of Deerfield, Michigan.
Whether they spent their day with the Mud Hens or the penguins, what Memorial Day means to them was on the minds of many.
"Freedom, thanking our vets for letting us celebrate this day with our family and getting to be together," said the Marbaugh family.
"My son is a veteran. He's been through the war and he's back home safe and my grandson is presently a United States marine, so Memorial Day is important to me," said Diana.
