Monica Dorner is an athlete through and through.  As a teen she played basketball, softball, and her greatest love golf.

However, her life and sports career almost came to a screeching halt one Easter Sunday, when she passed out after church.

Her parents assumed that she just got hot and dehydrated. Then a few months later she passed out again. Once every six to eight months she was passing out. She went to see many specialists, including a pediatric neurologist, they could find nothing wrong.

Then one day her aunt, who is a nurse, suggested that she go see a cardiologist. She came to see Dr. Will Suarez and Mercy Children's Hospital. After several tests, it was determined that Monica had Atrial Septal defect, two holes in her heart.

Most people with Atrial Septal defect are diagnosed at birth or as small children. Monica was 17 years old. Soon after the diagnosis, Monica had surgery, a catheter was placed in a vain in her leg and her holes were repaired. Monica left Mercy Children's Hospital two days later, with no scares, just a Band-Aid.

She is now getting ready to graduate high school, and looking forward to playing college golf at IUPU.
