FDA says tanning beds must now have warning labels FDA says tanning beds must now have warning labels
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The FDA is cracking down on tanning beds as they work to combat the growing number of skin cancer cases. One Toledo area business is being proactive in promoting safety and alternatives to UV.

"The more we can talk about it, the more we can educate especially our younger people," said Kathryn Swope.

Swope knows the dangers of the sun and UV tanning beds. Skin cancer runs in her family.

"It was one of those things that touched my heart," said Swope.

So she started her own spray tan company, SunSpray By Kathryn. She works to teach people about UV safety and the warnings that go along with tanning beds. Warnings the FDA is now backing. Thursday May 29 the FDA announced new requirements for tanning beds.

Tanning beds musts all have warning labels on them saying they should not be used by anyone under the age of 18. They have also reclassified beds from a class one to class two device, which means they carry a moderate to high risk for users.

Swope says she hopes people looking for some color consider a spray tan instead of the rays.

"I just feel like it keeps them safer longer and as we all know the younger you are when you start tanning, the more of the lifelong risks could be skin cancer," said Swope.

Studies show just one indoor UV tanning session can increase your chance of developing skin cancer by 20 percent. It's a risk more and more people aren't willing to take.

"There's definitely an increase in popularity, more people coming in," said Swope.
