Positive personnel records for Riverdale teacher do not impress student’s family attorney

MOUNT BLANCHARD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The family attorney of Riverdale kindergarten student Ian Nelson says he wants a new investigation. He claims Barbara Williams' husband is one of several chaplains for the Hancock County sheriff and he says the attorney general's office needs to get involved.

Sixty-nine pages of personnel records for Williams express nothing but glowing reports for her conduct in the classroom. All of the documents provided by the school superintendent date back to the beginning of Williams' career, before her tenure at Riverdale.

A letter from Spencerville Schools in Ohio dated in 2000 says, "Williams is a natural teacher. She has a calm and compassionate matter that my first graders found comforting."

Williams has been charged with one misdemeanor count of child endangering after a video was caught on Riverdale School surveillance cameras where she was seen picking up her student by the shirt.

Nelson's family attorney says the information in these personnel records doesn't change anything that happened in the video.

"A crime is a crime and evidence of a crime is evidence of a crime…Walk into a bank and rob a bank and shoot somebody and this is your first offense, do you ignore the fact that somebody robbed a bank or do you charge what you have evidence for? This is a six-year-old student," said Dan Margolis, Nelson family attorney.

Margolis says he is in the process of filing paper work with the attorney general's office for further investigation into this case.
