Company that runs Lucas County Head Start to lay off 280

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The company which runs Head Start in Lucas County says it plans to lay off 280 employees at the end of July.

Community Development Institute Head Start has run the Lucas County Head Start program for the past year. According to a WARN notice filed with the state, the company will lay off 280 employees on July 31.

We're working to determine if they laid off employees will be hired to continue running the program by a new organization.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services, which runs the federal Head Start program, says it is in negotiations with an organization (or organizations) to be selected as the new Head Start provider for Toledo. HHS says an announcement about the new provider will be made by June 12.

An HHS Spokesperson say once the new grantee is in place in the late summer, teachers and staff will be hired by the organization.  It will be up to the new grantee to determine who will be hired, although it is likely that many current CDI employees will be re-hired by the new grantee, HHS said Thursday.

"That's crazy to me I just feel like it's ridiculous," said Porchea King, who has been sending her daughter to Head Start for 2 years.  "I could understand if it was like 10 or 20, but 280 is a lot of teachers, bus drivers, anything.  That's going to be limiting transportation. It's a lot of tough decisions they're going to have to make for that."

King says the layoffs will affect more than just the students, too.

"They don't deserve to get laid off, especially if they are doing a good job. At least do a survey first to see if they're doing a good job. They're just trying to take their job away from them," said King.
