Erie Shores Council recognizes volunteers who mentor Boy Scouts

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Thursday June 5 was special for adult Boy Scout volunteers. They were honored for helping young boys become men.

It was the 88th Annual Scouters Recognition Dinner.

The event was sponsored by the Erie Shores Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Every year, the adults are recognized for their dedication to scouting.

"It's amazing the time and energy they spend with our young people being concerned about the youth development and leadership skills that need to be developed over time," said Ed Caldwell of the Council.

Six people received the highest volunteer award from the Boy Scouts. It's called the Silver Beaver. Recipients like Gary Harden say scouting allows him to use his mentoring skills.

"I started off with somebody helping me when I was a young lad. I have a passion making sure we find teachers for the future," said Harden.

The Scouts appreciate the guidance they receive from these volunteer role models.

"They cheer us on to reach our goal and do stuff for us," said Jon Earley.

"They helped me become an Eagle Scout and other things like merit badges and everything," said Jack O'Connell.

The need for volunteers continues to grow as scouting in the area grows. If you're interested, contact the Erie Shores Council.
