A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A couple planning their wedding recently faced a life changing situation. Dale and Carolyn Ryan were jogging together on May 28 when Dale suddenly went into cardiac arrest.
"Apparently I was feeling pretty good so I said "Oh, I'm going to finish this pretty strong." I ran up ahead of her and I guess she found me passed out on the ground having spasms," said Dale Ryan.
His partner said she didn't know what to do.
"I haven't been trained in CPR so I just kind of did what I saw on TV," said Carolyn Ryan.
Dale was eventually taken by life flight to Toledo Hospital where he spent the next three days in a coma. He woke up on the couple's two-year anniversary of their first date. Doctors needed to perform a triple bypass surgery to save his life. The couple was planning an October wedding, but with his prognosis in mind, they decided to push it closer.
A day before the surgery, the couple married at the hospital chapel.
"For me it really didn't matter, you know how or where it actually took place. It was just about us being committed to each other and making sure that we took care of each other," said Dale.
Doctor's say the CPR Carolyn performed on Dale saved his life. Dale says he is feeling much better and went home Tuesday June 10.
When asked what their first plans are as man and wife, they each respond differently. Dale is realistic.
