Collingwood United Methodist Church to close after more than 190 years

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Collingwood United Methodist Church on Phillips Avenue in Toledo has held worship services for more than 190 years, since 1823. Later this month, the church will hold its last service.

Church leaders say declining attendance and membership numbers, along with financial difficulties are to blame. Back in the 1950's the church had more than 1,500 members. Today, they have just 120. Leaders say about 30 are in church each Sunday.

"It is a sad occasion. This is the only church I've ever known," said member Rhonda Wheeler. "Like many main line denominations, our members live in the suburbs. Many live in Michigan and we drive in to vocation on Sunday morning which makes it difficult to sustain a ministry when you have very few people to work."

The church's final service will be held Sunday, June 22 at 11 a.m.

A church of a different denomination is looking to purchase the building.
