BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Reporting by Vanessa Fayz - Bowling Green State University welcomed a new four-legged member to the school Wednesday June 11. The addition will help add extra security to the campus. This is part of Governor John Kasich's plan to strengthen school safety for all ages.

"It's amazing what they can smell in comparison to what you and I can smell," said Lieutenant John Stewart.

The newest addition to the BGSU Police Department is Jerry, an 18-month old Belgian Shepherd. He is trained extensively in explosives detection.

"It just makes it much easier to respond to threats. A dog's nose is much better than our eyes in terms of trying to determine if a building is safe," said Chief Monica Moll.

Lieutenant Stewart is Jerry's handler. He says he's very excited to have this opportunity, and hopes that more universities in the state of Ohio will follow their lead.

"There's so many great opportunities now with Jerry here to provide for the safety of the community, not only BGSU but everybody in this whole region," said Lieutenant Stewart.

Chief Moll hopes that having Jerry will add confidence and certainty to BGSU students, staff, and the community.
