Memories relived at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall in Defiance

DEFIANCE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's always a solemn occasion when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall rolls into a community. This weekend the stop is at Defiance College.

Everyone has a special reason for visiting the memorial. Joanne Doenges brought her granddaughter Tori from Avon in order to teach her about freedom.

"So that when she grows up she'll understand why people sacrificed for her to have the freedom and ability to choose what she does with her life," said Doenges.

Vietnam veteran Dave Smith searched the wall for the name of his buddy Jack Hinkle. He found it and snapped a cell phone picture. The two went to high school together in Lyons.

"Oh, just his friendly face and just Jack being Jack is how I remember him. I've never found out how he was killed or where he was killed," said Smith.

Then there's bronze star recipient Larry Slagle. Whenever the wall arrives in the area, he comes to honor the memory of the men and women he served with.

"Out of the squad we had eleven guys. There's only three of us left," said Slagle.

There are 58,235 names on the wall. You can visit it 24-hours a day through Sunday June 15 in Defiance.
