TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The pictures are hard to look at, but a badly injured dog is lucky to be alive, after someone noticed it wandering on Willard St. in east Toledo.

The Lucas County Pit Crew says the dog was more then likely injured by another dog, and the owners didn't get it medical attention.

Those injuries got worse, until the owners simply got rid of the dog.

The female pit bull was picked up by Lucas County Canine Care and Control on Thursday. On Friday, they evaluated her injuries.

When the dog, now named Helen, was taken in, she could not open her eyes because her face was so swollen.

Helen is now in much better spirits after receiving medication and will be released by Canine Care and Control on Tuesday.

The Pit Crew has a rescue home for the dog to go to.
