The historic Sandusky County Jail is open for tours. Monday June 16 many people had the chance to get a look inside the jail and dungeon. It was built in 1890 and shut down in 1989.
"They built it underneath the ground before our first courthouse was finished and it was specifically done to keep prisoners from escaping," said Katherine Rice, Travel event specialist.
Rice explains that the dungeon is beneath several feet of limestone so it would have been difficult for a prisoner to get free. She says sentences in the jail cells ranged anywhere from one day to three years.
"If you were lucky and your family was wealthy, they could get you a candle. Otherwise you were in pitch black. Bread and water was for dinner of course. And you did get a blanket, so it wasn't terrible. But we didn't have restroom facilities and things of course," said Rice.
The jail was shut down just about 25 years ago because the state deemed it as cruel and unusual punishment.
If you want to tour the jail, call the Sandusky County Convention and Visitors Bureau at 419-332-4470 or sanduskycounty.org. You can also purchase tickets for the dinner theater in the main part of the jail.
