CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

If you live anywhere near the lake, you're probably waking up to the first swarm of mayflies this season.

The pesky little buggers are blanketing everything in sight! They're just falling from the sky, sometimes thousands of them.

According to Rocky River Nature Center's Marty Calabrese, there are 2,000 mayfly species worldwide. Mayflies can live from a few hours to a month.

They may be a pest, but Calabrese says they serve an important purpose.

"They are indicators of good water quality," said Calabrese. "So they're not going to be around if there's lots of pollution. Trout like to eat them. Birds like to eat them. They're great for migrating birds. This is a big food source, lots of biomass."

This year, there may be fewer of these harmless bugs.

"The emergence was delayed, as well," Calabrese said. "There are some thoughts as to why. Perhaps decaying algae on Lake Erie has sucked up some of that oxygen and they don't do so well. They need clean, fresh water."

Adult mayflies are only around to reproduce. It's a good sign to see them around the lake because it means the lake is healthy.
