Perrysburg community grieves loss of high school student

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Perrysburg community came together Thursday June 19 to remember a high school student out at the softball field. This was the perfect place, since she was a member of the team.

Perrysburg school leaders say this student took her own life. Perrysburg High School Principal Dr. Michael Short says students wanted to do this as a way to remember her and be able to grieve together. This is something he says is important for the healing process.

"A service like this I think is really important for the kids to show a sense of community, shared loss. The organizers certainly feel a sense of purpose in that and I think everyone coming together for this is a wonderful show of our high school community," said Dr. Short.

Counselors have been available the last several days and will continue to be available to help students through the grieving process.

A note was sent out from school officials talking about the loss. Parts say, "A suicide death presents us with many questions that we may not be able to answer right away... Any time death touches us, it is stressful. This sudden loss may be quite shocking and confusing. For these reasons, we especially want you to know that we are all here for you."

Dr. Short says it a complicated issue.

"There's a lot of talk of, was she bullied? Was there a break up or something in the family? A whole host of ideas floating around and a lot of finger pointing going on. And really it's probably none of that and all of that. It's a complicated matter. You can't just point to one thing," said Dr. Short.

Dr. Short also says that even though school is out, they are being proactive and providing counselors for students to talk with.
