State posts incorrect scores for Toledo charter school

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

This week, the Ohio Department of Education released passage rates for students related to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Teachers and administrators at one Toledo charter school were shocked at what they found on the state's website.

"Our third grade teachers were very upset knowing how hard they had worked and how hard the students had worked," said Kids Unlimited Academy Executive Director Erica Pharis.

The state re-posted results from the school's spring tests, rather than the fall numbers. That data showed just 4 of 22 students had passed the reading guarantee test. In fact, 15 of the 22 students passed the reading test and 20 of 22 met the requirements for the third grade guarantee.

Students, teachers and administrators say they want to get the word out about the mistake to protect the school's reputation.

"My fear is that the community partners stop referring, assisting, supporting us, thinking that our scores were not up to par, when in fact they were above average," said Pharis.

Pharis says 75 percent of the 22 students tested this year were brand new to Kids Unlimited Academy, and came in a grade level or two behind. Pharis  says that made the school's above average scores even more impressive.
