Editorial: TPS Superintendent provides summer learning tips for parents

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

This is a WTOL guest Editorial by Dr. Romules Durant, Toledo Public Schools Superintendent.

Summer is a time for traveling, spending time with family and friends and exploring new adventures. It is also a time when students need to remain engaged in learning so they don't fall behind when they return to school this fall.

There are a few simple, yet important steps that parents can take to keep their children actively learning this summer.

First and most importantly, read. I strongly encourage all students to sign up for the Summer Reading program at their local library. Make frequent visits to the library and ask for assistance in choosing age appropriate books. Have your child read aloud to you. They can read from their new books or road signs as you take a family vacation.

Secondly, visit the Toledo Zoo, or Imagination Station or maybe the Metroparks. Toledo is fortunate to have quality educational yet recreational venues based here in our community.

Remember, summer is a time for fun, and for learning. Oh, and I'm TPS proud; a proud graduate of Waite High School, Class of '94.
