A man who was in court Monday June 23 has been a subject of several Call 11 For Action stories. Christopher Barnes is charged with several theft crimes, including theft from the elderly. Monday his trial was to begin, but that didn't happen.
In a last minute decision, Barnes chose to take a plea deal rather than go to trial. He is facing 6 charges. He pled guilty or took an Alford plea for theft from the elderly after promising work, collecting down payment and never delivering. With that admission, three other theft charges were thrown out.
The final part of the plea deal was to ask the judge to dismiss the final two charges. These stem from a contract Barnes' company entered into with Clear Channel Radio. He signed a contract agreeing to pay around $27,000 for advertising on one of Clear Channel's radio stations. He also agreed to provide a free roof to a contest winner.
Barnes Construction only paid Clear Channel for a portion of the advertising, and never provided the roof for the contest winner.
This isn't the first time Barnes has faced a judge for this type of situation. Barnes has already been sentenced in Monroe County for two counts of unlicensed residential building. He never completed a $30,000 construction project on a family's home, but pocketed the money.
The judge now has to determine if Barnes should face the charges relating to Clear Channel and be sentenced for them. July 31 Barnes will be sentenced on the theft from the elderly charge, and will find out what the judge plans to do with the final two charges.
