Toledo to build 5 roundabouts in coming years

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo's "thousand islands" intersection will be almost unrecognizable when a new construction project is completed. The area is so-called because of the confusing intersection of Cherry Street, Collingwood Boulevard, Manhattan Street, Berdan Avenue and Detroit Avenue.

Two roundabouts will be constructed in the area, breaking up the confusing and sometimes dangerous intersection.

"This will make the flow of traffic far safer. It'll make it far more user friendly and then it will enhance our ability for economic development while it preserves neighborhoods," said Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins.

Drivers will see detours in the area throughout the project.

"This is truly an exciting day. This represents the culmination of a partnership between multiple agencies to make a really significant important improvement in north central Toledo," said David Dysard with the Toledo Division of Engineering Services.

The price tag for these first two roundabouts is $5 million. City officials say they do not have an exact completion date.

Two more roundabouts will be constructed in 2017 at Berdan Avenue and Jeep Parkway and at Berdan and Haverhill.  One other roundabout well be constructed in 2018 at Manhattan and Phillips.
