TPS considers school for Spanish-speaking students

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools is considering organizing a school to help students whose primary language is Spanish.

The district is still in the early stage of planning, but the school could potentially be for students in Kindergarten through second grade. Lesson plans would be taught in Spanish and English to help students reach their full potential without a language barrier.

There are more than 2,000 Hispanic students in Toledo Public Schools. Baldemar Velasquez, the president of the farm labor organizing committee, says there is a need for the school.

"We have changing demographics in our community with many immigrant workers, many that did not show up in the last census," Velasquez said. "I think this is a good way to reach out to a particularly vulnerable group of young people that are going to have special problems."

There is no timeline in place for when this school could open. TPS plans to start the program at a Head Start location this fall.
