A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
A new mural was unveiled in east Toledo on Wednesday. The mural was to honor Elaina Steinfurth, who died just over a year ago.
Several of Elaina's family members and friends were at the building near Starr and Main for the unveiling. The mural was painted by artists at LeSo Art. They say they're want to make sure Elaina is not forgotten.
"I really hope that it means a lot to the family," said Amber LaFever, one of the artists. "It means a lot to us. I feel like it's the least we can do as neighbors, to support our neighbors and their family, [after] all they have been through."
The mural is expected to last about five years. The artists will do touch-ups to maintain it as needed.
