Boonville cemetery gets new Civil War memorial

BOONVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

VFW members in Boonville marked Independence Day by paying special tribute to the vets buried in an old Warrick County cemetery.

There is a one-of-a-kind grave in the old boonville cemetery.

The headstone is largely cared for, the name is still legible, but that's not the case for many other graves.

Some are abandoned or toppled, the names, they're forgotten.

That's why one local VFW post wants to make sure the veterans buried here aren't forgotten anymore.

At a ceremony they unveiled a memorial with the names of every Civil War and War of 1812 veteran buried in the cemetery.

Many of the soldiers' graves don't have headstones or identifying information.

VFW Commander Chuck Wright says that makes it hard for the living veterans to properly honor their memory.

"We figure that it's Independence Day," says Wright. "These guys fought in the Civil War for that. To keep the country united and we feel that we had to honor them."

The VFW hopes the new memorial catches peoples eyes and encourages them to pay a visit to the veterans buried there.
