TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

One of best to ever coach the game of basketball was honored this afternoon right here in East Texas. It was coach Carl Love appreciation day at John Tyler as the former head man of the Lions had the red carpet laid out for him by his former players.

An alumni basketball game was held at John Tyler High School to honor their former coach Love who guided the program from 1991 to 2007. "I told coach Clark hey I want to do something for coach Love just to honor him because I know he really had a retirement," Rakim Hollis said who played for Love from 1995-1999.

Jayson Mitchell who played for Coach Love in 1996 added, "These guys we really all have a passion playing for coach man and everyone here loved coach."

This was a long time coming for coach Love who to this day still means so much to the John Tyler community. "Every time I walk into this gym, my adrenalin starts running but it doesn't run anything like it does today just being able to see my ex-players," Love said.

Those ex-players may not have always liked to play for Love though. Coach was a no nonsense guy who wanted things done the right way.
"He made it rough, but he made everything easy to understand why we were doing what we were doing," Mitchell said.

Delbert Simpson who played for Love from 2000-2004 added, "He taught me the integrity of the game and that hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

He may have been a hard noised coach on the court, but Love left a lasting impression on his players. "Coach Love was just a great father figure," Simpson said. Hollis added," He would say hey dont go home stay in the gym. Shoot some jumpers, I will pay for your lunch if you need me to pay for it and that was a coach and father figure to me."

Racking up over 400 wins during his tenure with the Lions, the father figure and coach takes pride in his accomplishments. "When I look at those banners and in the trophy case its a warm feeling that there was a sense of accomplishment here," Love said.
