Sylvania hires 7 part-time firefighters

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sylvania Fire Department is bringing on an additional seven part-time firefighters, who will start next week.

The new firefighters will fill in for full-time firefighters on sick leave or vacation. Meanwhile, Sylvania Township is hoping to add a 1.5 mill fire levy to the November ballot.

"I think if the firemen ask for seven more people, I would trust that they do need them, and I know they are busy," said Penny Garber, a Sylvania resident.

"They have laid off a lot of people," added resident Sue Jankowski. "To bring staffing back up to what the needs are, with the area growing, it is probably a good thing."

Township Trustee Jon Jennewen says over the past three years, the fire department has gone from having 10 part-time firefighters to three.

Township Administrator John Zitler says the part-time firefighters will save the township on overtime pay. He did say, however, it will cost additional money to train and outfit the new firefighters.

While residents are supportive of the additional staffing, they don't want the additional taxes.

"Nobody likes to have their taxes go up," Jankowski said. "Sylvania pays high taxes on a lot of different things – school levies and other levies, so it may be difficult to get a levy to pass."

The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $78 per year. It would be used for operating costs.

Trustees are expected to make the final vote to put the levy on the ballot on July 15.
