SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A roundabout project at McCord Road is now slated to cost millions more than the initial estimate.

The project will also involve building an underpass at McCord Road in Springfield Township. People living in the area say they have mixed feelings on the project.

"The roundabout they can do away with, there is no reason for it," said Carl Wandersee, a local resident. "The underpass that they are going to put in should have been put in years ago."

The original estimate from ODOT for part of the project – fixing a sanitary sewer – was $484,000. Now the cost is up to $2.9 million, but Lucas County Engineer Keith Early says he has a plan.

"We agreed, subject to the commissioners' approval, to deposit an additional one and a half million (dollars) right now so that the project has what is needed to allot the award to the contractor," Early said.

He says they expect to try and scale back, but if not, they'll figure it out.

"We will discuss additional funds that are needed later," he said. "Possible overruns or value, engineering savings, which will be ours, which funding they might take some of this from – that will be a later discussion."

Todd Audet with ODOT says estimates are rarely off this much, but the complexity of the project can make a difference.

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken says they plan to meet with ODOT on Monday to further discuss the increase, and commissioners plan to vote on it Tuesday.
