BULLARD, TX (KLTV) -
A bicyclist was clipped by a vehicle while going over an overpass on Highway 69 in Bullard on Monday.
Bullard police say Mark Cathey, 57, of California, was riding on the northbound shoulder when a white Ford truck driven by 52-year-old Samuel Vercher, a Bullard resident, clipped Cathey. Vercher stopped and called 911. Cathey was taken to the hospital.
"I remember riding up the overpass and I don't remember anything after that," Cathey said.
The 57-year-old grandfather was in Texas visiting family, when he went for a routine bike ride Monday morning. Cathey has been recording his rides for years: first to show people the sights along his rides, now as a safety measure.
"I've seen things happen in front of me that I've been able to get a license plate number or information," Carhey said.
He hopes the video will help show what cyclists go through and to alert drivers about the potential for these events.
Cathey's injuries are extensive. He suffered a collapsed lung, five broken ribs, and a broken scapula among other scrapes and bruises.
"It'll keep me off my bike for a while," Cathey said, but he plans to make a full recovery in eight to twelve weeks.
Vercher was cited for failing to maintain a single lane. Vercher called later to check on Cathey.
Cathey was taken to the hospital and has since been released.
The police chief says that this was not an intentional act.
