Six American flags vandalized in Findlay

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A public display of patriotism was found destroyed in Findlay: Several American flags mounted on poles up North Main Street, near the Downtown Improvement District, have been cut over the past few weeks.

"We can't imagine anybody could desecrate a flag like this," said Karl Kulman, one of two residents who voluntarily buys and hangs the flags year-round.

"There's a lot of meaning behind it. I had a lot of relatives in the service, and this is Flag City, USA," said Kulman.

Findlay Police say six flags have been vandalized, but there is no surveillance video from local businesses in the area where it is happening overnight.

"It's very disrespectful," said Kathy Helms, a longtime resident of Findlay. "Whoever did it absolutely has no respect for the people around here."

Findlay Police are currently investigating the vandalism. They are hoping the public can help them catch the culprit.

"If they see anybody suspicious at all, give us a call," said Lt. John Dunbar. "Maybe they see someone lurking around the flags, maybe they see someone looking at them suspiciously."

"We want to find out who did it, have them prosecuted and have it stop," said Kulman.

Kulman has gotten a lot of support from other residents ever since he, along with friend Nick Moser, started hanging the flags around the city years ago. On Tuesday, one veteran even stopped by Kulman's family auto shop on North Main to donate money toward replacing the damaged flags.

Anyone with information that could help solve this case is asked to call the Findlay Police Department at 419-424-7163.

Joe Stoll, owner of Toledo Flags, saw this report and wanted to do something about it. Stall has set up a donation jar inside his store to collect money to replace the flags.

Toledo Flags is located at 4849 Summit Street in Point Place.
