Rossford considers back-in parking plan for downtown

ROSSFORD, OHIO (TOLEDO NEWS NOW) -

More parking spaces may be coming to downtown Rossford as the city looks at a unique parking method.

It can sometimes be hard for drivers to find a place to park in the downtown area, and most people agree that more spaces would be welcomed, but not everyone is on board with the city's idea to require driver to back into angled parking spaces.

"With the back up, I think it's going to cause more problems and a lot more accidents," said resident Charlie Gyori.

The idea is that in addition to making more spaces to park, backing in will mean easier re-entry onto the road. But many residents aren't sure if that's the best solution.

"You're going to pull out into traffic, and someone's not going to be paying attention, and it's going to cause a lot of accidents," Gyori said.

Angie Hamilton owns NRGIE Salon and Spa in downtown Rossford. She thinks the idea is worth a try.

"I think it'll be great," Hamilton said. "It's going to give the boulevard a different look. If it doesn't work, I guess we can switch, but I think anything new we can try."

Rossford Mayor Neil MacKinnon says the project would double the amount of parking spaces downtown. He says he is aware that backing into spaces may be difficult, but it doesn't have to be permanent.

"I think now's the time to take some chances," he said. "It's just striping, so if we find out it doesn't work or it's not what our citizens particularly care for, we can just re-stripe it."

The mayor says the city is still researching the idea and it's not set in stone yet. Once they do figure out a plan, he says they'd like to get it started right away.
