What you can do now to prepare for an emergency like the water crisis

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Leaders of the American Red Cross say there are a few things you should have on hand to prepare for any emergency whether water, weather, or fire related.

"I think people always think that it's never going to be them," said Amanda Aldrich, Regional Communications Specialist for the Red Cross. "So I think taking the extra time to make sure that you know what to do, then I think they're much more likely to again feel more comfortable if something were to happen. Although it's an inconvenience, you at least have the supplies that you need."

The Red Cross recommends putting together a preparedness kit for your home.

Items include a bag of blankets, important documents, toys for the kids, a flashlight with batteries and a cell phone charger.

They also recommend gathering non-perishable food items and bottled or bagged water, as seen this weekend. The Red Cross recommends keeping one gallon per person per day.
