Marana Police reports increase in phone scams

Posted: Updated:
MARANA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A new scam preys on the possibility motorists ran a red light or drove faster than the speed limit.

But before they pay their ticket, police want to warn drivers of a fraud reported in Southern Arizona.

The Marana Police Department has seen a recent increase in phone scams involving someone claiming to be a police officer, telling people they owe a traffic fine. They'll claim the driver was caught speeding on a traffic camera, failed to appear for the scheduled court date and owes various fees and fines for the violation, police said.

The caller also threatens to suspend the victim’s driver's license if the fine isn't paid immediately by using a Green Dot pre-paid card.

Marana Police urges motorists to contact their local police station to report these fraudulent calls.
