A major construction project on roadways surrounding Cincinnati's second largest employment area was officially green-lighted Thursday.

Improvements to the Uptown Martin Luther King Interchange are expected to expand access to Interstate 71 and areas around University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Officials ceremoniously kicked off the project with a press conference at the Medical Center, saying faster ambulance response times are one of the many benefits the complete project will bear.

The $80 million project will reportedly be a major economic boost to the area due to better interstate access.

"It will help solidify revitalization by supporting job retention and job growth," said Uptown Consortium Chairman John Prout.

Construction is expected to be completed by September 2017. It will reportedly improve travel conditions for the more than 45,000 residents and 55,000 employees in the surrounding neighborhoods.

FOX19 NOW's Traffic Report will provide updates when the MLK interchange construction is expected impact your commute.
