The expectations are already climbing for Charlie Boren's first season as Faulkner's head football coach. In the preseason Top 25 poll released Monday by the NAIA, his Eagles are ranked No. 10.
Faulkner, which went 9-3 in 2013 and won the Mid-South Conference West Division championship, made its first appearance in the NAIA playoffs last season, losing on the road to Saint Francis 20-13 in snowy Fort Wayne, Ind.
"The only thing being ranked in a preseason poll means is our program is becoming more visible nationally, and that's a good thing," Boren said. "When things get kicked off here in a couple of weeks, where we're ranked means absolutely nothing. We have to keep putting the work in to continue to improve as a team, and all that other stuff will take care of itself."
A total of five MSC teams made the Top 25 poll. Others are Cumberlands (Ky.), ranked fourth, Georgetown (Ky.), ranked 12th, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), ranked 18th, and Cumberland (Tenn.), ranked 25th. Defending national champion Grand View (Iowa) is No. 1 in the poll, having received all 15 first-place votes.
The Eagles open their season Aug. 30 on the road in Babson Park, Fla., against Webber International. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. central time. Faulkner's home opener is the following week, with Southeastern (Fla.) visiting Billy D. Hilyer Stadium for a 7 p.m. start.
