Sheriff: Heroin a growing problem in Lenawee County

LENAWEE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Lenawee County Sheriff says he has seen an increase in drug activity in the county recently, particularly heroin.

Sheriff Jack Welsh says his office has seen an increase in heroin use not just in Adrian, but in smaller towns throughout the county.

"It's a growing issue and it has been for some time," he said.

The sheriff says heroin arrests and deaths have increased in the county over the last two years. He says a big part of the problem is that heroin is very addictive and affordable.

"It's a terrible, powerful drug and it's just amazing what it does to people and how difficult it is for people to get off of it," Welsh said. "We also know that drugs - not just heroin, all drugs – affect our crime."

Welsh says he's adding another deputy to the force in a few weeks to help in the battle against heroin. He says there are many support groups and substance abuse organizations doing their part to help, as well.
