Local Foods Week encourages consumers to shop local

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

"It matters where you grow it."

That's the motto for the Toledo Grows Market stand on Oneida Street in north Toledo. The produce there is grown by the Toledo Botanical Garden on three acres of land.

"The food is grown using organic methods, here on our property," said Yvonne Dubielak, who runs the stand. "It's picked fresh, yesterday and today. It's all about eating local, buying local, and supporting local growers."

Customers can also buy fresh eggs from local chickens and, later this year, fresh local honey.

The phrase "locally-grown food" does not have one definition, but many consumers these days take into consideration where their food is grown or raised.

"The good local growers have the sign up saying where it's been grown," Dubielak said. "I've learned even when you go to a farmer's market in the area, just ask, ‘Where was this grown?' The definition is very broad."

The Northwest Ohio Food Council is sponsoring 'Local Foods Week.' The idea is to develop personal relationships with growers and producers to find the freshest, safest, most local food.

The Toledo Grows Market stand is open on Thursday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
