A-State Volleyball picked 8th in Sun Belt

JONESBORO (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Arkansas State volleyball team was picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll selected by the Sun Belt Conference coaches, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

The Red Wolves received 58 points after registering a 9-9 SBC record (T-5th) and advancing to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals a season ago to finish four points behind SBC newcomer and seventh-place selection Appalachian State. Louisiana-Lafayette finished just five points ahead of the Red Wolves in sixth place with 63 points and one first-place vote.

UALR was picked atop the poll with 110 points and four first-place votes while the SBC representative in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Texas State, was second with 99 points and three first-place votes. Rounding out the top five were 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Georgia Southern (95), UT Arlington (83), and South Alabama (76).

Following the Red Wolves in ninth place was Troy was 41 points, while Georgia State (28) and ULM (11) were the final two teams in the poll.

Arkansas State opens the 2014 season Friday Aug. 29 at the George Washington Invitational against host George Washington at 9 a.m., followed by an afternoon match against North Dakota at 4 p.m.
