Female kicker earns starting spot at Midlothian

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) -

As a junior, Midlothian's Ashley Hancock was playing in the annual powder puff game. When the contest ended in a deadlock, field goals were decided on as a tie-breaker, and that's when her football journey began.

Trojan head football coach Kevin Thomas happened to be watching the powder puff game, and noticed Ashley and her ability to get the ball through the uprights. The kick would be moved back five yards, yet she would continue to boot the ball through.

Thomas asked Ashley if she'd be interested in kicking for the football team. Her first love had always been soccer, but she decided to forego travel soccer this fall and give football a shot. She also embraced all the work that came with it. Ashley hit the weight room with her new teammates during the summer, attended every workout, and is now Midlothian's starting kicker.

Coach Thomas says she's hit the ground running, and her willingness to put in the work has impressed her teammates. Ashley also says the other players have welcomed her with open arms and she feels very welcome.

The senior has booted field goals as long as 45 yards in practice, and will handle field goal and kickoff duties during the season. Recently, coaches have been working with her on tackling technique.

Thursday marks the Trojans first game of the season, as they host Douglas Freeman. Ashley says she's a little bit nervous, but Thomas says he's not worried at all, and just wants her to get that first kick out of the way so she feels better.
