WTOL Editorial: Will the 2 Sylvanias meet in the middle?
WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob Chirdon
The people who live in the City of Sylvania and Sylvania Township vote soon on an issue to form a commission to study a merger. If passed, residents in both communities can do the "who wins" and "who loses" math.
If the merger benefits the city more than the township, or vice versa, that should be obvious. No merger can take place without a majority vote in favor of the merger from each community.
On the surface, this seems fairly simple. But nothing is ever simple on this topic. The idea of merging these communities generates a great deal of emotion and considerable distrust.
For example, the township trustees recently unanimously voted against a merger. So, by extension, they voted against forming the merger commission. The common name of the merger commission is "One Sylvania." that seems to me to indicate a bit of a bias.
Hopefully, reasonableness will win out. A real study, with very public results, should tone down the politics and replace emotion with facts. If that happens, both sides win.
