WTOL Editorial: If you don't get a raise, Congress shouldn't
Did you get a raise this year? Most people I know didn't.
Well, members of Congress will soon get one. That's right, their increases are automatic. It doesn't matter if we are in an economic mess, like now. That's crazy.
Michigan representative Mark Shauer agrees with me. He is a co-sponsor of legislation that blocks congressional pay raises through 2011. Our out-of-touch congressional members need to be reminded that many of us are losing jobs or facing wage freezes. It doesn't seem like much to expect them to share the pain. We should call or send an email and tell them to get real. By the way, Congresswoman Kaptur's office says she has given her mandatory raise to charity for the last 20 years. I wonder how many others can say that.
