Beware of IRS email scam

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - While the stimulus debate rages on, scammers are trying to take advantage of the situation. Your email inbox may have a scam in it right now.

If you have a message in your inbox claiming to be from the IRS saying you need to submit your "economic stimulus payment form," it's bogus.

First of all, no stimulus plan has passed. Second, as we have told you before, the IRS won't email you, ever.

The email has an attachment titled "Economic stimulus online payment form." Do not open it,  download it or fill it out. The attachment could open a virus on your computer, reading all your personal information and account numbers.

The email is looking for personal information using the IRS name as a decoy to trick and scare you into thinking you may miss out on a stimulus check. It is all fake. Scammers are once again,  trying to hook you into a hoax which could cause all kinds of problems for you.

"This is a prime example of an IRS phishing scam. All it is asking for you to click a link to verify information and they say there may be a delay in your stimulus if you don't click this link. The worst thing you could do is click that link," Ross Howard with the Better Business Bureau, told WTOC.

If you fill out the information, you just gave the thief everything they need to steal your identity and wipe out your accounts.

Here is what you need to do. Don't open the attachment.

Forward the email to phishing@irs.gov and delete the email. It is not real and the IRS wants to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.

A representative from the Internal Revenue Service said there are scammers using the IRS name. This has been going on for years and this latest version started in mid-December.

They want to receive the emails so they can go in and investigate and try to track down where the scams are coming from.

You will never be asked to fill out information on stimulus checks. Don't respond to anything like this.

If you've filed taxes, the IRS has your information and you will get a check if it happens at all.
