WTOL Vice President and General Manager Bob ChirdonLast weekend a dramatic rescue took place on Lake Erie when more than 100 ice fishermen became stranded on a large chunk of ice.
The ice floe happened when the warming temperature and southerly winds caused the ice to break and float away. Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton is angry at these fishermen -- and rightfully so.
"There's no section of the law about stupidity, because they could all be arrested today for that," Bratton said.
I agree with the sheriff. These guys knew the danger they were getting into. They even built a makeshift bridge across a crack in the ice.
Am I getting this right? It's close to 50, the wind is coming out of the south and they put planks to get further out. Their stupidity costs taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars. Money we just don't have!
Nearly every email I've received says the fishermen should foot the rescue bill. Some even went a step further saying they should be charged with reckless endangerment and fined.
Sadly, this won't be the last rescue, but it does raise the question: Shouldn't there be some sort of stupidity law?
