WTOL Editorial: If you're gonna fly, fly right

I said last week that start-up airline Jet Air was a risky investment. This ticked off some viewers off who thought I was being negative.

So I talked to Steve Weathers, the president of the Regional Growth Partnership, and to a spokesperson from the Port Authority. For the record, they agreed with my assessment.

That editorial does not mean I am negative about flying out of Toledo Airport. Quite the opposite.

In January we flew from Toledo to Punta Gorda Airport, which is close to Naples, Florida. This was a fast, inexpensive, direct flight on a newer plane.

Compared to Detroit, it was so simple. Punta Gorda is also a small airport so finding your bags and getting out was a snap.

Direct Air is adding a similar flight to Myrtle Beach, in case you're thinking about going there. The only way to keep Direct Air in Toledo is to fly it. If we don't use it, we will definitely lose it.

If we can make Direct Air a success, then maybe when the economy gets better the next start-up opportunity will make more sense.
